JODIE O’REGAN

SHORT BIO

Jodie O’Regan is an Australian composer and librettist who lives and writes in a 150 year old church in Burra, a small country town on the edge of the South Australian desert.

Specialising in intricate chamber music that forefronts singers and tells stotires, Jodie’s instincts have been honed over a lifetime of working with singers. After initially training and performing as a contralto, Jodie began her career working in children’s theatre, singing in a punk/opera fusion band and performing as an acoustic singer/songwriter. She was drawn to singing with others - singing, directing and composing for classical and folk vocal ensembles. Collaborating with her husband, baritone Emlyn O’Regan, Jodie has arranged a number of Celtic and roots folk songs for two voices, and they have toured extensively within the folk circuit.

Her larger works include sacred pieces, dramatic works for theatre and chamber operas. Jodie has worked with theatre companies to create scores for Shakespeare productions, held a year long church residency and worked with a range of singers to develop art songs.

As a pedagogue, Jodie has an extensive background working with choirs and adult beginners in a wide range of settings, specialising in helping beginning adults find their voices. After studying the Kodaly approach to teaching musical literacy to children, she adapted the techniques for adult learners. Her ground breaking work with adults was recognised with a grant from the Australian Kodaly Scholarship. She has published numerous pedagogical materials and accessible choral arrangements.

She now works as a teaching-artist with Lullaby Project Australia and was awarded Artist Of The Year in 2023. In 2023, Jodie produced a Shakespeare festival - Farty Bard Festival in Burra, celebrating the sillier side of Shakespearian plays and music.

Jodie has a BA in Anthropology, graduate qualifications in Professional Communication and a Masters in Music. She has written a poetry chapbook - The Beautiful Foolish Reason , enjoys studying acting and finished writing her first play.
